Southern Triptych
This work was created during an artist residency in Tropea, Calabria. It is inspired by opus sectile, an ancient technique involving the inlay of marble slabs or glass paste.
I experimented with and reinterpreted this concept of careful, meticulous work to create images that evoke the beauty of the places I have visited and experienced.

The Triptych:
Bergamot is a citrus fruit grown almost exclusively in the province of Reggio Calabria, Italy. It is renowned for its highly fragrant essential oil and its incredible health benefits.
.
Stroncatura is a type of pasta typical of Calabria. It is a long pasta, similar to thick, dark linguine, traditionally served with a simple sauce. It has a truly unique origin: it began as a byproduct made from the whole-grain bran left over after grinding wheat, which was then collected by the poorest segments of the population. For this reason, its sale was considered illegal for many years.
.
Salaturo is a terracotta jar, glazed on the inside, characterized by a wide opening that allows a weight to be inserted to press the vegetables during the preparation of the traditional peasant preserve of the same name. It’s prepared by alternating layers of fresh seasonal vegetables with coarse salt, garlic, and wild fennel, which are then left to ferment and pressed for about 20–40 days.
